Lafayette Jazz Concert in 2020

Lafayette a ‘Hub City’ of Performances Scheduled for 2020

Lafayette is full of arts and performance-minded people that like to perform. Because of this, there is a growing number of places where you can support the arts and catch a great performance. As 2020 draws closer, more details about the upcoming performances are becoming available, and Lafayette has quite a few great performances planned. Here are some of Lafayette’s scheduled performances for 2020.

Porgy & Bess by Gershwin

“Porgy & Bess” is a well-known musical and has been out of the Lafayette area for nearly 30 years. Fortunately, it is making its return in February of 2020. It is planned for Feb. 1, 2020, in the James Devin Moncus Theater at the Acadiana Center for the Arts. “Porgy & Bess” is a folk opera that tells the story of Porgy, a disabled beggar and his relationship with Bess, a woman stuck in an abusive relationship. It is a moving story to witness and masterfully combines opera with folk music and tales. If you have never seen it, it is worth checking out in person.

The Improv Rumble

If you want to try something less scripted and more spontaneous, check out “The Improv Rumble.” It is a show entirely comprised of improvisers and more than 25 will be involved this time. Everyone is given a topic and they run with it as best they can. The audience gets to choose the winner. This year, it will be in the James Devin Moncus Theater on Feb. 8, 2020. You can get tickets online and it promises to be an exciting, high-energy show.

Aaron Diehl Trio

The Aaron Diehl Trio features renowned pianist Aaron Diehl. While mostly focused on jazz, Diehl also has notable classical performances with the New York Philharmonic and other institutions under his belt. His latest performance series focuses on early jazz, which is relatively rare in jazz performance circles. He is bringing new life to older works while giving them a more modern take and feel. If you are looking for a quieter and more intimate performance to attend, the Aaron Diehl Trio is a good place to start.

The B-Side: Track 2 – Beyond Bassoon

The Lafayette Symphony Orchestra is bringing classical music and instruments to younger audiences with its B-Side series. It takes an interesting approach to music by picking unusual themes and applying them to classical and modern music. Beyond Bassoon is an all-bassoon group that plays pieces that people know and love. It is lead by the orchestra’s principal bassoonist, Catherine Marchese. This year, it will be on March 5, 2020, in Carnahan Hall. You can get tickets online or at the box office. It is an especially interesting take on current and past popular music.

There are plenty of other performances to choose from in Lafayette that let you support the arts while enjoying different entertainment options. Check with your local box office to see what other events become available as 2020 draws closer. You won’t be disappointed by the offerings in Lafayette.
